Today was another great day in the classroom at Fatima. We met forever last night discussing what was the most beneficial approach for the kids. Frustration was high and the Fellows were worried. But, to our surprise, the kids really enjoyed our lesson plan and were able to put together some great material for their blog.
We started the class with the kids filling in lyrics to a song as a way to get them a bit more comfortable with hearing and speaking English. We then let them think of funny stories they could narrate through the use of pictures. My group came up with some great situations. One girl showed us what she does on Saturday nights. Another wanted us to take pictures of her shopping. The two boys had us photograph them scoring a goal in soccer and marrying another girl in the class. We also had a scene in a restaurant and another involving how to deal with a burglar. They were able to narrate the stories extremely well in English and provided us with great captions for the pictures we took during the morning.
After school, which is at 12:15 on Wednesdays for the students, most of the kids wanted to participate in Mike’s theater lesson while some others played basketball. This was something the kids were not accustomed to as they usually just go home for the day. The theater lesson and sports were very productive and great ways to get the kids involved in positive activities. I hope they wish to continue their engagement with the Fellows after school and that Mike is able to put together a complete show at the end of our time here.
We’re off to Etoile de Mer again tomorrow and then we will be joining the entire Fatima school for their Sports Day on Friday. Should be another good end to the week.
Lastly, the Chase Community Giving lasts until July 13. We ask for your generous support. Winning this event would be a remarkable accomplishment for our charity. Voting is open now!
