December is the month of giving and sharing. It is the month where we notably give gifts and put smiles on the faces of children and adults respectively. At ELI Africa, our team, could therefore find no better occasion to hold our fundraising event. On the 17th December 2017, before 8am, our team of approximately 30 volunteers set out for St Thomas Church, in Beau Bassin.
We worked in the sunny weather and the beautiful green backdrop, preparing the hall adjacent to the Church to receive our guests. On the menu, we had delicious Mauritian specialities, pancakes with chocolate sauce, soft drinks and a really good mood. We finished setting up our stalls and welcomed our first church goers at around 9am. It was a real pleasure seeing people flocking into the hall, enjoying the homemade food and end of year atmosphere.
When the rush of the first mass was over, we had a good number of volunteers contributing their own money to get some food! The second mass was huge, and we had the opportunity to thank the priests for allowing this fundraising to take place. Once again, we all celebrated this month of giving in the best of ways, with music, food, and good people. We moved our products closer to the street at 3:30pm and then wrapped up the day by collecting the remaining food to give away as donation.
The funds generated will be used to finance the projects of ELI Africa. With this money, we will be able to buy better stationary and finance better classes for our children at ELI School, organise campaigns for animal welfare under ELI WOOFF or hold planting events for endemic plants under ELI Roots. We are deeply grateful to the St Thomas Church, all the generous church goers and also to our driven volunteers, who have made this event a success. Thanks to you, we can help put smiles on the faces of numerous children, and help toward making positive changes in our Mauritian society.
We do plan to hold more fundraiser events, because we have several other project ideas. Our team can hardly remain idle, being this passionate and always enthusiastic youth. Do stay tuned for more events. In the meantime, I hope you have had happy holidays.
