Mahatma Gandhi once said : «Be the change that you wish to see in the world.» We may at times wonder: What went through his mind when he uttered those very words? Do we have to revolutionise the world and make ourselves known? No,not at all! It is all about whatever surrounds us and how we choose to treat them- be it plants or animals. It all starts with little things which then give us the opportunity to achieve more. ELI Africa is not about getting involved simply for the sake of doing things. In fact, through the different projects we have – ELI Corps, ELI Wooff, Endemic Roots and the Mangrove Project, we seek to instill in our youth a desire to serve others. If we young people do not stand for those young children who do not have the chance to access a proper education, then who will?
Here at ELI Africa, we strongly believe that education could change the lives of many children. Hence, we do our best to fill the gap and help these children to aim high and dream of a better future. We have the strong conviction that, empowering those children is giving them the key to success. After all they represent the oncoming generation and we need to ensure that they are equipped with the right tools.
Through our various programs, we intend to provide them with a holistic education but also to give them the chance to develop their different passions.
We also care for our animals by sensitizing people that it is a must to respect their rights. We should not forget our plants as well. Many people do not realise the importance of trees nowadays. Young people are not aware of all the little things that they could do to improve the lives of some children in need or animals in distress. It is indeed shocking, but ignorance still prevails in our youth. How many youngsters are clueless about the horrible plight of the stray dogs on our roads, or the number of children in need in Mauritius, or even the gradual decline of our flora? There comes our role .ELI Africa is not simply an NGO, it goes far beyond that! It gives our youth a sense of responsibility but also a want to help others without expecting something in return.
Moreover, with the new acquaintances, we develop communication skills and also become more confident. Joining our team is a chance which is not given to everyone. We firmly believe that if you want to be part of our family, you should have the willpower and the energy to bring a change to the little things around. This is what ELI Africa seeks to bring in the mind of the Mauritian people: Taking a stance on what is right but also to give the best to support a good cause. How long will we sit idly and ignore the alarming rate at which deforestation is taking place in our country? Or how our animals are being constantly victims of man’s frustration?
We cannot and should not forget those pertinent issues but should try to find relevant solutions to tackle them. ELI Africa comprises different people each with different personalities and different attitudes, but one thing unites us; the want to make the world we are living in a better one. Surely, this will not be done overnight, but with constant help from people of different corners of our island, we seek to Make The Difference.
