ELI Schools : The Healthy Refreshment Project

ELI Schools : The Healthy Refreshment Project

It is no secret that the nutritional intake of a child is directly linked to his or her mental and physical development. One’s eating habits as a child can have a tremendous impact on one’s health later on as an adult. Unfortunately, with today’s fast-food outlets and street-food cultures, we can only deplore the continuously developing bad eating habits of our younger generation.

Hence, we came up with a healthy snack plan for the children. Every day, the children of our schools are provided with a simple, yet highly nutritious snack.

The refreshments are set out in such a way that they are healthy enough to contribute to their cognitive development, help support their immune system and enhance brain functionalities.

Among other options, the small meals include food like oatmeal which is rich in fibre and protein or lentil soup. Considering also children’s usual high sugar consumption, we have decided to eliminate sugary snacks from our refreshment and instead use fresh fruits as healthy alternatives.

While the child’s nutritional needs still highly depend on what he or she consumes at home, this initiative might just be what helps the child and those around him understand the importance of a balanced diet.

We are optimistic that children will really get to understand the importance of proper eating habits and that they will take the lead to ensure that at home, they could set ground rules for a healthier lifestyle.
