Why are endemic plants so important?

October 14, 2018 by Leah Ittoo in Endemic Roots
Why are endemic plants so important?

When we speak of endemic plants in Mauritius we are referring to plants peculiar only to our island.

These species represent the foundation of our natural ecosystem and are crucial for the protection of our biodiversity; but how far do we know about them?

The real, pertinent question is : Are we even conscious of the different existing endemic plants in our country?

We do not realise it, but those native plants make our island unique, since they belong to our country and form part of our identity.

Hence, it should be must for us to preserve them.

Endemic plants are being lost to habitat destruction, invasive plants and pests; where should we start for protect them?

We should first get to know them to be able to take further actions.

This week ELI Africa is making it a must to let you get better acquainted with endemic plants.
