ELI Africa was started as a small student group at Yale University by Vedant Seeam. The latter first founded H.O.P.E (Helping Orphans Prosper through Education), an organization that eventually evolved into ELI Africa.
2010 ELI Fellows program

During the months of June to August 2010, six Yale University students led an 8-week pilot program in Mauritius during which they taught groups of underprivileged children using experiential learning techniques.

In October 2010, ELI Africa was incorporated as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in Mauritius.
Launching the ELI Corps program in Pamplemousses

With a view of providing educational opportunities to underprivileged children all year round, ELI Africa launched the ELI Corps program which gives the opportunity to Mauritian people to impart their knowledge and teach in its educational centers.

Launching the Mangroves Propagation project

Led by Mr Gaurav Dabeesingh and under the supervision of the Ministry of Fisheries and Rodrigues, ELI Africa launched its Mangroves Propagation project in 2012 by planting 14,000 propagules in the region of Anse Jonchee, Providence, Bois des Amourettes, and Bambous Virieux.

Launching the Community-Based Coral Farming project

In collaboration with the Mauritius Oceanography Institute and funded by the United Nations Development Programme’s Global Environment Facility (UNDP-GEF), ELI Africa launched a community-based coral farming project in Trou aux Biches.
ELI Africa awarded the Green Africa Awards 2013

In 2013, ELI Africa won the Highly Commendable Award at the Green Africa Awards 2013 for its Mangrove Reforestation project.
ELI Africa wins the 2013 Youth Excellence Award
